My 2008 vacation in September was a visit to Yellowstone National Park. Its the one with the Old Faithful geyser.
I took this picture when I was on a hike around Ice Lake and saw this grey wolf on a trail. It was thrilling and a little scary to be so near a wild creature. I must warn you the Ice Lake trail is NOT an easy hike. Wear hiking boots and bring walking stick(s). You also have to cross 2 streams with a possibility of getting wet both times.
This beautiful blue water is part of one of the many hundreds of thermal features in Yellowstone. You can see the steam coming off the water, and this was on a day where the temperature was cold enough out that snow on the ground was not melting. The heat for the thermal features comes from the magma underneath Yellowstone. The majority of the park itself is a culdera of a Super volcano which is due to erupt within the next 10,000 years.
I was happy to be able to get this picture of a buffalo while I was in the park.
This is a picture of a cute little waterfall in Yellowstone. It was at a roadside pull out, but I don't remember seeing a sign with the name of the falls. The park has great paths to view the water features, including the waterfalls.
As we were driving back to our hotel this sunset caught my eye.
More and more the history channel, PBS and the travel channel are having specials about national parks, and most of them have had specials on Yellowstone. The park is just wonderful. Make sure to give yourself at least a week to explore it.
