My New Outside Blog: Mount St. Helens

Mount St. Helens

Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument.  The park service has done a good job of making nice signs for the park.  While the cute puff of smoke above the volcano in the picture looks harmless, the eruption in the 80's was very destructive in terms of loss of life and property.   I remember for days hearing about the ash covering peoples cars in Washington state and some other parts of the northwest as well.

Here is what's left of a an actual tree after the eruption.  It is inside the observation center and is across from the volcano.  The park service has a wonderful movie about the eruption, make sure and make time to see it.  The screen is about 3 stories tall and at the end of the movie they take away the screen and you see what is left of Mount St Helens.  This site is dedicated to David A. Johston.  He is a researcher who died in the eruption.

I went there in the summer of 1995 when they were having 15th anniversary events. Did everything they had to do, but it took us two days, so we had to stay in a hotel one night, which we weren’t expecting to do, so we had no reservations. We also had a lot of problems finding a vacancy.

Hi Jim, we stayed in Seattle when we went to Mount St.Helens, but its good to know that if we want to stay near there we better get reservations ahead of time.
